Introduction
The M-209 was manufactured in several models.
- M-209: The original model manufactured by Hagelin's factories.
- M-209-A: The first model manufactured by LC Smith Corona
Typewriters Inc. under licence from the Hagelin Company in 1942.
- M-209-B: The further copies built by Smith Corona Company in
1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945. There are minor differences between
this model and the former one.
- CSP-1500: The Navy model.
Approximately 12,000 M-209A were built and nearly 100,000 M-209B.
One can understand that the M-209A models are more rare ... and
therefore more expensive. The model of the Navy is very rare (only
several thousand copies).
Remark: The Nick Gessler's Web site is the good place to learn more
about differences between M-209-A and M-209-B.
M-209 original model
After the acceptation by Americans of C-38 (the future M-209) as the
tactical cipher machine, an initial order for 50 machines was submitted
to Hagelin. This first model allowed to train the Signal Corps staff.
It was very different from the following models (A and B). In fact, it
corresponded exactly to the Hagelin C-38. For example, it had locks,
and therefore keys. The A and B models didn't have locks.
A training movie about Message Center Procedure shows a M-209 original
model (with locks).
